Load Lock

A load lock is an interior cargo-control device used to help hold freight in place.

Plain-English Meaning

The term is often used for bars or devices that brace freight inside vans and reefers. In practice, the exact device matters more than the nickname.

Check fit, condition, trailer compatibility, track or wall contact, and whether the freight face can take the pressure. A load lock that slips after the first few miles is not doing useful work.

Use load locks with the load pattern, blocking, straps, airbags, and door-area checks. They should not be the only answer to unstable freight.

In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.

Watchouts

  • A load lock can slip or crush packaging.
  • Do not rely on it to solve a poor load pattern by itself.
  • Record inspection limits when a sealed trailer prevents verification.
