Glossary

Load Shift

Load shift is cargo movement from its intended position during loading, transit, braking, turning, or unloading.

Plain-English Meaning

Load shift can affect vehicle control, damage cargo, create door pressure, break packaging, or cause a securement system to lose tension.

The cause can be simple or mixed: poor pallet pattern, weak packaging, insufficient blocking, low friction, bad weight distribution, road shock, or inadequate tiedowns.

For sealed or enclosed freight, the first visible sign may be door pressure, leaning pallets, broken wrap, or a receiver exception note rather than a full view of the load.

In day-to-day freight work, the safest use of the term is narrow and factual. Confirm the current rule, equipment rating, shipment condition, and company procedure before using any glossary definition for a live securement decision.

Watchouts

  • Do not open doors under pressure without a safe plan.
  • Document seal status and visible condition.
  • Report shift through company procedures.
  • Avoid guessing the cause in first field notes.
